Big Dreams, Little Skills

Sometimes being a big kid sucks. When I got out of college, I thought I could do anything. Sip cocktails by the country club pool while my husband works? Sure. Write a book? In my spare time. Own a clothing store? Done.

But then I found out that “cute and funny” doesn’t count as a “skill” and the next thing I know I’m picking up coffee for ten people in my office and spilling it all over my favorite J.Crew peacoat. Now I’m in this new phase in my life where I have big dreams and little skills. I like to call this the “crying in the bathroom” phase. I’ve talked to at least 5 people just this week who have cried in the bathroom at work for some reason or another, and it doesn’t mean we don’t love our jobs. It just means that sometimes life doesn’t turn out how we thought it would and sometimes that sucks.

I’m learning now that I have to go through this phase because someday when I’m sipping cocktails by the country club pool, reading a book that I wrote, and wearing a sun dress from my own clothing store…I’ll be grateful for all the things I learned when I had big dreams and little skills.

Or I’ll still be crying in the bathroom.
